Now the internet is in a down right uproar over the official announcement that Oscar-winning filmmaker Ben Affleck has been cast as Batman. Affleck’s name, while recognizable, wasn’t even on anyone’s radar to fill the Bat-shoes until yesterday.
Many speculated whether they would try and go the Marvel route and cast Christian Bale for continuity sake, but he had already made statements that he would not consider donning the cowl again unless The Dark Knight Trilogy director Christopher Nolan was attached to the project. But since Snyder is still at the helm for the project, they had to find someone else. Mad Men’s Jon Hamm, The Hunger Game’s Wes Bentely, and Gangster Squad’s Josh Brolin were among the many names that were thrown around to play the role.
Since the announcement from Warner Brothers yesterday, fans have been joking, booing and virtually pulling their hair out over the choice all across the internet. They’ve even coined the hashtags #Batflek, for better or for worse. Many cite Affleck’s terrible performance as Marvel’s Daredevil, which also makes him the third actor in recent memory to play two different comic book heroes from two different universes.
I can understand people’s confusion and anger (Batman is one of my favorite characters, as well), but we’ll never really know how the movie and Affleck will be until we actually see it. I wouldn’t be so quick to judge him, and especially not because of a botched performance 10 YEARS AGO. He is definitely not in the same acting league as Bale, but if you saw Argo or Hollywoodland you know that he has come a long way from Gigli.
I’m not applauding or knocking the decision to cast Affleck, because I’d rather see him in action before passing any judgement. And I think that a lot of people forget that a movie doesn’t rest on the shoulders of one or two people. For a movie to be good, you must have a good cast, a good script and a good director to make everything come together and shine.
